After careful consideration and much consternation I have made a decision which will be final.
Not only will I keep my dogs, I will increase their number. The real question is should I increase the number by 1 or 2?
Why?
One of the most popular suggestions for this trip is that I get rid of the dogs as if they are a piece of furniture. Ah, that chair is old, you should throw it out. Dogs might hold you back - throw them out. One person suggested putting them down and many others have suggested the give them away option. When did this happen? When did a lifeform's very existence end up to be the equivalent of an inanimate object's?
So, what is the Value of a dog? It is found in Safety.
Not pretend safety like a house or car alarm. Not safety in the presence of fear - such as in Homeland security. Or the safety of electronics like PC's, Cellphones, and reverse tracking devices. But real Safety.
The Safety of Connections:
Love, Cherrishment, Instinct, Perception, Intelligence, Consideration, Enjoyment, Commitment, Happiness, Calm, Play, Reliability, Concern....
The Safety of Mutually Extended Senses:
Smell, Sight, Taste, Hearing
The Safety of Mutually Extended Intelligence:
2D, 3D, Smell-D, Cognitive thinking, Instinctual thinking, Extrapolation
The safety of numbers and unpredictability:
Where three or more walk, none follow.
What does it all mean?
My dogs will protect me and I will protect them and we can assist each other as a team.
My dogs tell me every human that shoots up insulin vs. uses drugs vs. uses the wrong cologne: they have a different reaction to each one.
Also, I can distract, engage and/or disengage any non-family animal that goes into wild attack mode. My dogs can trust me to be there for them as well. It's a Mutual Relationship.
And in an even rarer moment, we can all even protect the cat from Turkey Vultures - even though Cooper would much rather eat Mau. (Cheshire Grin)
We have protected each other from Bears, Mountain Lion's, Husky's that hate Wolves, startled rattlesnakes and an entire herd of Javelina (Wild Boar) and unfortunately on many occasions - ill willed humans.
It's the difference between a telephone switchboard and an automated system that won't transfer you to a real person.
A cross-country trip will be safe and enjoyable BECAUSE of all the extra-legs.
